… Can Anyone Keep their Mouth Shut ? [National Security / Foreign Affairs] …

Posted by paulfromwloh on Tuesday,November 5th,2013

.. It is absolutely amazing when people , namely our allies , who work with us , and supposedly trust us , how they must be reacting and thinking when you have news that leaks out in the news media that should be better kept secret . Unfortunately , we have people in our government who have a big problem with keeping their big mouth shut .

.. Bob Gates , the former Defence Secretary , put it aptly a couple of years agao . It was , if I remember , when news of the Stuxnet virus had leaked out , but it had not been confirmed who did it , and why . Also , it was around the time that our Navy Seals got Osama Bin Laden , I think …
What he said , in response to a question about keeping national security secrets , especially when the ObamaCrap Administration kept leaking them , was a real dandy ….

… it was Shut the Fuck Up ! …

… a classic case of the damage that this lack of national security can do came up in a blog post by a favourite Reaganite columnist of mine , Dr. Elliot Abrams …

Is the United States Spilling Its Allies’ Secrets?

by Elliott Abrams November 1, 2013

The news of the last few weeks has been filled with complaints that the United States is electronically spying not only on enemies but on allies as well. As I wrote in a previous blog post, if we have in fact targeted the cell phones of leaders of friends and allies, such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, we should stop. Yes, the world is a dangerous place and gentlemen do read each others’ mail, but deliberately targeting the leader of an ally such as Germany is wrong and stupid. And especially so given the risk, these days, that such conduct will leak and damage important allied relationships.Spying this way on allies is bad enough. Revealing their secrets to the press is even worse. Yet we have a pattern of doing this when it comes to Israel, and the most recent example came on October 31.

Earlier this past week a Syrian military base in Latakia was hit, and apparently an important quantity of missiles meant for delivery to Hezbollah were destroyed. There was speculation about the attack, including suggestions that Israel rather than Syrian rebels conducted it. But Israel remained mum, as it always does. It believes that its security is greatly enhanced by such silence, in part because bragging about these attacks might well humiliate Hezbollah or Assad and push them into some kind of retaliation. It is for this reason that Israel sought absolute American and Israeli official silence after its attack on the Syrian nuclear reactor in 2007. Indeed Israel still to this day, six years later, does not officially acknowledge that it conducted that attack. The United States remained silent about that attack until the danger of retaliation was thought to be gone.

But once again this week American officials told the press that Israel was responsible for an attack on Syria as soon as it occurred.

Here is the CNN story:

Israeli warplanes struck a military base near the Syrian port city of Latakia this week, an Obama administration official told CNN on Thursday. An explosion at a missile storage site in the area was reported in the Middle Eastern press, but an attack has not been confirmed by the Israeli government. The target, according to the Obama administration official, was missiles and related equipment the Israelis felt might be transferred to the Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah. The official declined to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the information.

U.S. officials did this as recently as July, as a New York Times story reported:

Israel carried out an air attack in Syria this month that targeted advanced antiship cruise missiles sold to the Syria government by Russia, American officials said Saturday. The officials, who declined to be identified because they were discussing intelligence reports, said the attack occurred July 5 near Latakia, Syria’s principal port city.

And we did it in May:

A series of powerful explosions rocked the outskirts of Damascus early Sunday morning, which Syrian state television said was the result of Israeli missile attacks on a Syrian military installation. If true, it would be the second Israeli airstrike in Syria in two days and the third this year…An American official, who asked not to be identified because he was discussing intelligence reports, said the targeted shipment consisted of Iranian-made Fateh-110s

There is a pernicious pattern here, and other examples could be cited. Add this to the NSA revelations, and the United States seems to be aggressive in stealing the secrets of some close allies and aggressive in ignoring the interests of allies by conveying intelligence information to the press. The continuing leaks about what Israel has been doing are dangerous and damaging. Israel is acting where we are not, enforcing red lines when we have failed to do so, and assuming risks we have refused to take. We act as a poor ally if we repeatedly and indeed recklessly increase the risk to Israel by treating sensitive information as fodder for the press.

… LEC here again — we need to  do a much better job of protecting our nation  ‘ s secrets . Especially when they also involve those of also our allies . If we are going to have close allies , we are going to have to protect their secrets , as well , and not leak them to any press corps …

… Hezbollah has a Death Wish [Syrian Chemical Arms] …

Posted by paulfromwloh on Monday,September 23rd,2013

.. you think that someone in Hezbollah ‘ s high command would be doing some serious thinking about this . If this blogger knows about this story , and the Washington Free Beacon , Al Wahat , and the Jerusalem Post know about the story …

Opposition: Some chemical arms smuggled onto Russian warships.

[the Jerusalem Post // Yaara Shalom]

Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces are smuggling chemical weapons to Hezbollah hidden in trucks carrying vegetables in order to escape international chemical inspection, Syrian opposition member Dr. Kamal Labwani told Saudi newspaper Al Watan on Monday.

The chemical arms are set to be stored in Hezbollah-controlled mountain areas of Lebanon, where it will be difficult to find and monitor them.

Syria has also been able to smuggle the bulk of its chemical arsenal to Russian warships stationed off the coast of Syria, Labwani said.

On Sunday, Lebanese daily Al-Mustaqbal reported Syria has moved 20 trucks worth of equipment and material used for the manufacturing of chemical weapons into Iraq, but Baghdad has denied allegations that it is helping the Syrian government conceal chemical stockpiles.

The report came just a day after the United States and Russia struck a deal stipulating that the Assad regime would destroy its chemical arsenal to avert an American military assault.

Al-Mustaqbal, a publication that has long been affiliated with anti-Syrian political elements in Lebanon, reported that the trucks crossed the boundary separating Syria with Iraq over the course of Thursday and Friday. Border guards did not inspect the contents of the trucks, which raises suspicions that they contained illicit cargo, according to the paper.

Intelligence and Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz said on Sunday that Israel is able to track attempts made by the Assad regime to transfer its chemical weapons to others.

“Israel has good capabilities, and has drawn a red line over the transfer of chemical weapons to terrorist organizations, including Hezbollah,” Steinitz told Army Radio.

[-] that the Syrians would be playing “footsie” with the Russians is no big surprise . The Russians are the longtime arms supplier to Syria . Big Shock . [-] Considering the weakness in US humint (human intelligence) , I wonder highly (unless the Israelis have told them) that the C.I.A. knows that the Russians have been storing the chem weapons on ships .
[-] If they are doing so to deactivate them , and take them away , that is a bird of a different feather . Let them . Trust Me ,
[-]the Mossad will know if the Syrian Government (Assad and his cronies) or anyone else has ahold of those weapons . They will keep quiet about what they know until there is a need for folks to know , them …. BOOM !!!!
[-] since the Mossad knows , Hezbollah has to realize that Israel will not tolerate them having these arms . Israel will target them , know exactly where , or approximately where they are , target them , and destroy them …
[-] .. Israel will have to make a determination , that they will go after these weapons — They have to , because they cannot tolerate the threat to their population from terrorists having even a small amount of these weapons . Syria ‘ s stocks are so large (@ around 1,000 tons , or 2 million pounds) that a small share of this is a significant amount , and any part of it ending up with Hezbollah is intolerable .

[-] .. Israel also must understand that if they do , it is possible that Hezbollah (and Iran) may use this as an excuse to “kick off” against them . They may not  want it , but Iran knows that either an American strategic strike or an Israeli one is coming . They may decide to take the initiative away from Israel and America , and act first , and blame Israel .

[-] God help them both  , if they do . Israel would then have no compunction against using  any and every weapon in its strategic arsenal in retaliation against either Hezbollah and /  or Iran . Significant parts of Lebanon will be reduced to a smoking ruin , while so will Syria (who just might be stupid enough to try to take advantage) . I  doubt Syria would be that dumb , because they would know that a retaliatory strike against Syria by Israel would be “playing for keeps.”  Assad and the Alawites would be “dead men walking.

[-]… the same for Nasrallah and his leadership . I strongly suspect that Israel knows exactly where to get at them ,  when they really need to do so . When the go order is  given , they are dead , as are their “toys.”

[-] … a strategic strike against Iran , especially if it is done in retaliation for an attack on Israel , would likely start as a conventional attack , at least at first . It would likely not stay that way . Israel ‘  s strategic doctrine is similar to that of the United States , but with a quicker hair trigger . [N=B=C] , or [Nuclear=Biological=Chemical] . If Iran or its stoolies uses chem weapons first , then there is no one on the planet , including POTUS or anyone else who will stop the Prime Minister of Israel from a strategic response , except for his or her own conscience , and that of the Israeli people …

Israel Angered by U.S. Leaks of Submarine Missile Attack on Syria

Israeli officials say leak should have been coordinated with Tel Aviv

Bill Gertz // July 24, 2013 5:00 am

Israeli government officials voiced anger at U.S. press leaks traced to the Pentagon following the July 5 Israeli missile attack on the Syrian port of Latakia that destroyed a shipment of Russian-made anti-ship missiles, according to U.S. officials.

Senior Pentagon officials, including Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter who is currently visiting Israel, discussed the leaks during meetings with Israeli officials this week. The Israelis argued in private meetings and other exchanges that the disclosures could lead to Syrian counterattacks against Israel and should have been coordinated first with Tel Aviv.

Pentagon press secretary George Little declined to comment when asked if Carter discussed the leaks in meetings with Israeli officials on Monday.

The Israeli military attack was unusual because it involved a submarine-launched cruise missile strike on the Syrian city of Latakia, a major port.

The covert attack destroyed a stockpile of what was believed to be 50 new Russian-made anti-ship missiles called the Yakhont that U.S.

officials said could be used against ships that will provide arms in the future to Syrian rebels.

According to U.S. officials, the Israeli government censored domestic press reports about the attack over concerns that any public discussion might prompt Syrian counterattacks against the Jewish state.

Israel also feared the Yakhont missiles would be transferred to Hezbollah, the Lebanese-based Iranian terrorist organization that in the past was supplied by Iran with advanced Chinese anti-ship missiles.

A Hezbollah-fired C-802 anti-ship missile was used to nearly sink an Israeli corvette off the coast of Lebanon during the 2006 summer war. The C-802s were sold to Iran in the 1990s and transferred to Hezbollah to reaffirm the U.S. commitment to the unprecedented security cooperation between the United States and Israel, and to discuss a range of issues of mutual importance, including Syria and Iran,” by Tehran.

Carter met with senior Israeli security officials “Little said in a statement issued Monday.

Among those who met with Carter were Defense Minister Moshe “Boogie” Ya’alon, National Security Advisor retired Maj. Gen. Yaakov Amidror, and retired Maj. Gen. Udi Shani, director general of the Defense Ministry.

“They reaffirmed that the U.S.-Israel defense relationship has never been stronger and agreed to continue to consult closely on shared security interests,” Little said.

The reports on the Latakia raid that angered the Israelis first appeared on CNN July 12 and a day later in the New York Times.

The news organizations quoted “multiple U.S. officials,” and “American officials” respectively.

Israel has carried out several foreign military attacks in recent years, most notably the airstrike that destroyed a Syrian-North Korean nuclear facility at Al Kibar, Syria.

Israel’s military has also conducted attacks in Syria in recent months that were aimed at destroying caches of shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles and Iranian short-range ballistic missiles believed destined for Hezbollah fighters.

A U.S. official said signs of Israeli anger over the Latakia raid disclosures appeared in several Israel press outlets. One Israeli official was described as “furious” over the leak because the Pentagon did not coordinate its release of information first with Israel.

Other Israeli officials were quoted as saying that in the aftermath of the Yakhont missile strikes that ties between Israel and Syria had reached a new peak and that there are worries that tying Israel to the attack will prompt Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to retaliate soon or against a future Israeli attack.

Israel has said that it would take action to prevent chemical weapons from falling into the hands of terrorists in Syria. But it has not commented on its lesser actions against Syrian arms sent to the Damascus regime by Russia or Iran, Assad’s main backers.

Israeli press commentary on the Latakia raid disclosures suggested the U.S. news reported risked the lives of Israeli and may have been part of Obama administration debate over U.S. military intervention in Syria’s civil war.

Another commentator, Dan Margalit, stated in the daily newspaper Yisrael Hayom that the leak was part of a U.S. ploy to force Israel into the Syrian conflict as a way to pressure Assad into stepping down and leaving the country, as a way to avoid U.S. military intervention.

Another journalist, Ron Ben-Yishay, wrote on the news website Ynetnews that the Pentagon leaked the information to show that airstrikes in Syria are possible.

Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, this week outlined U.S. military options for Syria in a letter to Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Sen. Carl Levin (D., Mich.).

The Obama administration recently agreed to supply Syrian rebels with small arms but is considering larger military intervention, including the imposition of an air exclusive zone over Syria.

An Israeli government spokesman referred questions about the leaks to a comment made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that was published July 21 in the German news outlet Welt am Sonntag.

Asked if it bothered him that sensitive information was leaked on the Latakia raid and other past operations by Israel’s American friends, Netanyahu said: “I am not responsible for what people say we do or don’t do. I am responsible for our policy which is to prevent the transfer of dangerous weapons to Hezbollah and I am also responsible for what we say and if I have anything to say, I’ll say it.”

… Nice Going , POTUS , You Waited too Long …

Posted by paulfromwloh on Friday,June 14th,2013

.. I am not convinced that the Obama administration has a plan for intervening in Syria, which apparently crossed President Barack Obama’s so-called red line by using the lethal nerve agent sarin against as many as 150 of its own people. Do not be

surprised if it is a great deal thousands more than that . Everything has changed . And because we did not intervene early in ‘11 and ‘12 al-Qaida has penetrated the opposition .

.. I am also not sure that whether the Obama administration plans to see the U.S. intervention in Syria through to the fall of Assad . What we have right now is a decision which on the humanitarian level and moral level if it is fine , but it is late . It is certainly not well prepared. Unlike the situation in Libya, he said , the Assad regime is part of an axis that includes Iran, Iraq, and Hezbollah.

.. The ObamaCraps ‘ decision is a political act . I believe that it has been done with no strategic planning or thought . It was not done as part of a well – thought – out plan . What seems to be happening is a political decision in front of the international community , in front of the Syrian opposition and people that we are doing something . I fail to see the planning for the long – term results of today’s decision. So we are forced to support the principle , but at the same time question the plan . In simple english , what is the plan ?

.. It is my belief that the ObamaCraps are far from ready to confront the Iranians . Until they are , no one , and I repeat , no one will take them seriously .

… Israel Steps Up , While POTUS Wimps Out …

Posted by paulfromwloh on Monday,May 6th,2013

.. Well , the news has gotten out . And how . With a bang .

.. To be sure , Binyamin Netanyahu does not mess around . Other parties , especially Israel ‘ s enemies , would be sure to understand that . to wit , Israeli forces have carried out an airstrike against a shipment of sophisticated missiles bound for the Lebanese political and military organization Hezbollah, officials in Washington , Lebanon and Israel told reporters Saturday … Lebanese authorities and

bibi netanyahu

bibi netanyahu

residents had already reported unusually intense Israeli overflights during the previous 48 hours , suggesting the warplanes may have struck their target from Lebanese airspace.” Israeli planes struck again on Sunday outside Damascus.

.. Big shock . Not that Lebanon or Hizbullah can do anything about it . If they were to even try to lock on with their fire – control radar , much less actually try to make use of it , Israel will cut loose with the fullest measure of its retaliatory capability . Any country surrounding Israel knows this . Turkey knows this . Does Iran understand this ? Oh , does the Obama Administration ?

.. So much for the suggestion by critics of stronger U.S. action that Syria’s anti – aircraft system is formidable . It seems someone in the Israeli government took a not –  too – subtle swipe at the Obama administration ’ s equivocating on Bashar al – Assad’s use of chemical weapons  . “Israeli officials described the  missiles targeted in the Friday strike as ‘game-changing’ weapons, according to the Associated Press. They said they were not chemical weapons, but advanced, long-range , ground-to-ground missiles . ”

.. Translation : When Israel draws a red line, it means it . When the ObamaCraps draw a red line , they do not mean it .   .. Not only does the Israeli action contrast with the U.S. government’s wusieness , but it also raises the issue of whether anyone would prefer that Israel police the Middle East .

.. It is unbecoming of a superpower to stand by , and allow little Israel take on the Iranian surrogates. It will likely unnerve our allies elsewhere . It will also embolden foes in other parts of the world.

.. Many nations in the world do not like an assertive United States . It makes them nervous . It makes the U.S. somewhat unpredictable . However , it is better to be feared , than to be weak . The only thing that the nations of the world hate more is a U.S. administration that is weak .

.. These days , Assad and his senior partners in Tehran should feel rather confident . The United States is obviously unwilling to back up

... the first wus ...

… the first wus …

its rhetoric with action . Syria is likely a dress rehearsal  for the bigger conflict between Iran and the West . There , too , one suspects , Israel will be forced to act , sooner or later .

.. For what Israeli prime minister could rely on this administration to act? If Obama wil not take on Syria, there is little chance he’ll make good on his threats to Iran.
