… Bravo to a Brave American Woman [#US Chess Champion]…

Posted by paulfromwloh on Sunday,October 23rd,2016

.. Somehow the International Chess Federation scheduled the upcoming World Championship in a rather unfriendly place  …. of all places …. Iran …

.. in this case , the World Women ‘s Championship ..

.. but the US Champion [Nasi Paikidze]..

.. is refusing to go . Why ? ..

.. because she and all the other competitors would have to wear a hijab , or religious head covering . To Nasi , it is a sign of oppression ..

“Some consider a hijab part of culture,” Paikidze wrote. “But, I know that a lot of Iranian women are bravely protesting this forced law daily and risking a lot by doing so. That’s why I will NOT wear a hijab and support women’s oppression.”

On Tuesday, Paikidze clarified her reasoning to protest the championship stemmed from her desire for freedom, not dislike of Islam.

“A message to the people of Iran,” she wrote on Tuesday. “I am not anti-Islam or any other religion. I stand for freedom of religion and choice. ️ I’m protesting FIDE’s decision not because of Iran’s religion or people, but for the government’s laws that are restricting my rights as a woman. My personal experiences with Iranian people have been nothing but wonderful ️ One day I hope to visit Iran and see women having complete freedom and equality.”
